Urban monuments preservation area Praha [ Městská památková rezervace ]
The historical and cultural development of the city began in the 9th century; the preservation area is some of the largest preserved urban wholes in the world; spreading down both banks of the Vltava (Moldau) over an area of 860 ha.
The historic core includes the areas of the Staré Město (Old Town), Malá Strana (Lesser or Merchant´s Quarter), the Hradčany district including Prague Castle, the Nové Město (New Town) and Vyšehrad and its environs.
Among the most significant monuments are Prague Castle with St Vitus´ Cathedral and St George´s Basilica, the Vyšehrad fortress, the Municipal House, the National Theatre, the "U Hybernů" house (the "House of the Irish Monks"), the New Town Hall, the Old Town Hall with its astronomical cloks, the Archbishops´ Palace, the Church of St John of the Rock, the Loretto, the Thun Palace, the Norbertine monastery at Strahov, the Liechtenstein Palace, St Nicholas´ Church in the Malá Strana, the Wallachian Chapel, St Thomas´ Church, the Lobkowicz Palace, the Černín Palace, the Belvedere (Queen Anne´s Summer-house), the Schwarzenberg Palace, Charles Bridge and its tower on the Old Town side, the Church of Our Lady of the snows, the house "U Zvonu" ("At the Sign of the Bell"), the old Jewish cemetery, the Old-New Synagogue, St Clement´s Church, the Bethlehem Chapel, and St Agnes´ monastery.
