Svitavy region

... a region situated in the unspoilt nature of the undulating countryside of the Svitavy Downs (Svitavská pahorkatina). The towns and villages of the Svitavy region offer a wide range of cultural programmes, sights, pieces of folk architecture as well as relaxation and sports activities. Thanks to the easy reach of the Eagle Mountains (Orlické hory), the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Českomoravská vrchovina) or the Moravian Karst (Moravský kras), the Svitavy region has become an interesting starting point for an active holiday.

Svitavy - the capital of the region may well boast of its marvellous square with arcades, a number of churches, splendid burghers´ houses and villas. The square is dominated by the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and worthy of attention is also the rich interior of the originally Roman Church of St. Giles. The representative buildings - the Ottendorf Library, the municipal cultural facilities or the so-called Langer Villa housing the Municipal Council - prove the town´significance in the 19th century.

The environs of Svitavy are not of less interest either. Rosnička (Tree-frog) Pond is located in a picturesque countryside to the north-west of the town, the village of Kamenná Horka can boast of a wonderful belfry with a wooden extension. Koclířov is a village situated in the middle of green meadows and forests. In its graveyard a unique Way of the Cross is to be seen. Březová nad Svitavou offers unforgettable views from the hills surrounding the village.

Information on what the town and its surroundings offer to a tourist may be obtained from the local Information Centre.

Litomysl - with its typical arcaded square and a Renaissance chateau the facade of which has rich sgraffito decorations and whose court in fact is a gallery of sculptures by one of the most outstanding living Czech sculptors, Olbram Zoubek. The birthplace of Bedřich Smetana and the scene of the well-known music festival "Smetana´s Litomyšl" - these are other attributes of this town whose importance and attractiveness for tourists cannot be unnoticed. If invited to Litomyšl and its environs, you must not forget to visit Portmoneum - Josef Váchal Museum, the chateau neo-Classical theatre or great examples of sacred architecture - the Baroque Piarist Church of the Raising of the Holy Cross, the Church of Sending the Apostles or the Piarist School - as well as the unique Red Tower, the most important preserved part of the town walls.

Frequently visited places in the surroundings of the town include Nedošínský háj (Nedošín Grove) Sanctuary with a stone chapel and a nearby pond. Of great interest are also the so-called sandstone stables - rock formations near Budislav. And again a splendid nature well suitable for having a rest, taking a long walk and relaxing.

Policka - a dower town of Czech Queens lying at the edge of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. In the 18th century Polička was among the most splendid Czech towns. Even these days the town offers to see one of the best preserved town fortification systems in Europe, a Baroque Town Hall, the Church of St. Michael and the Church of St. James. The local people´s workmanship may be proved by forty beautifully carved neo-Classical gateways and front doors in burghers´ houses. The surrounding countryside has a network of more than a hundred kilometres of signed tourist tracks, tourists can visit the splendid early-Gothic castle of Svojanov - once the residence of the Bohemian Queen Kunhuta and the knight Záviš of Falkenštejn - with an exhibition of clay figurines by Jan Kutálek, Toulovcovy maštale (Tolouvec Stables) - a sandstone rock maze - or the small villages in the valley of the Svratka river. In the nearby town of Bystré the visitors may take a walk along the charming little square or admire the Baroque Town Hall and the Church of St. John the Baptist or the Renaissance chateau.

Moravská Trebova is situated in an area of a medieval mercantile trail lined by a number of guard castles and barrier forts. Their remnants are still to be found and form romantic sceneries. In the town of Trnávka, ruins of the castle of Cimburk are to be seen, and also the ancient Kučina with pieces of Baroque plastic art around the Church of St. Giles is a place tempting visitors. Mladějov and its vicinity may be toured on one of the last remaining narrow-gauge railways with steam engines.

Moravská Třebová itself (like most towns of the region) was marked by German colonisation, the traces of which are to be noticed in Baroque and Renaissance adaptations. A prominent sight is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin on Křížový vrch (Cross Hill) - the Calvary. The square has a plague pillar opposite which the Town Hall is situated.

Important local cultural events include the annual festival "Slovak Culture Days" in the museum and "Chateau Mockery and Amusement" in the chateau.

Jevicko - is one of the oldest towns of the Svitavy District. It was founded as early as in 1220. The originally Gothic pieces of architecture carry traces of later Renaissance and Baroque adaptations. These days one can admire the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin or the isolated Cburch of St. Bartholomew, the foundations of which were laid in the year 1300. The synagogue, which is open to the public even these days, reveals that Jevíčko used to be a place with an important Jewish community. Amongst the unique sights is also the Town Tower, the purpose of which was to warn the inhabitants against oncoming enemies, to gather people at fires or to sound the bells during significant Christian festivals. Its history has been traced as far back as to the 16th century. Jevíčko has a special position within the Svitavy region for one more reason - because of lying in a fertile lowland on the frontier with the fruitful Malá Haná region, it has developed many differences in its dialect, customs and folk-lore. Jevíčko and its environs are really apt for a family holiday with swimming, cycling and hiking possibilities.
